I am astonished that Yale spends $1.4 (34% of all revenues) bn a year from the endowment on top of the fees paid by the students. The track record is quite impressive, I have to admit. Uniquely able to take a very long-term view, armed with big sums to manage, and perfectly placed to hire the ablest minds from academe, they are laboratories that test theories and turn them into practice. It will be interesting to see how greenhouse gas emissions will affect their performance.
Do you know what is their inflation-adjusted return over the past 10 years?
Yale, like the other Ivy League unis gives out lots of scholarships. Only children of very wealthy people will pay full fees. So, net student revenue is not a big deal for them. Research dollars are also big. You can get the endowment's annual reports here:
