Australia

Snork Maiden was offered the job in Australia. But she still needs to do a phone interview with the guy in Arizona next week. Looks like she'll have some time to make a decision on the Australian offer. If offered the Arizona job is probably better career-wise. Anyway, the countdown to some real decisions has started. I'm happy for Snork Maiden but the main emotion just now is feeling rather nervous about making the right decision for us. Life will be easier if there is no offer from Arizona :)

Glad to know the update in Snork Maiden's job hunting. Does SM only consider academic career options? They're much more limited, though female PhDs do enjoy much better popularity for faculty positions.

2-body problem is really hard. I hope you and SM will find the right trade-off for better lives together!

The real options are academia, NGOs, and state governments (in US as you need to be a citizen to work for the Federal Government). At one point she was keen on NGOs but I think has had second thought about being in such an activist role. She's only applied for 4 jobs and been interviewed for 3 so far. So she is in high demand. She's not that keen on teaching. The Australia job is a research position for the Australian government. One big advantage of Australia is she can get to be a citizen in three years which is much quicker than here. Also we would almost be in the same time zone as China. But a harder trip to see my family. Anyway, I lived there for 6 years already. In the city where this job is.

She is indeed in high demand. I'm a bit surprised that she only applied for 4, though I only applied for 5 myself. I forgot that this year's H1b for industry is already gone. However, if she has a full year of OPT left, she is okay to go to industry.

Teaching was also my concern. So I opted for a research position in the end. It seems to me that Australia is an excellent choice if you want to settle down quickly. The GC and Citizenship in US is really pain in the butt.

I'm not sure what kind of "industry" positions are open to her. Some kind of consulting maybe. Nonprofits apparently aren't covered by the cap and are relevant to her. OPT is a backup plan if one these wasn't going to work.
